The Pursuit of Joy

Although our Ladies Bible Study will not be meeting this week, I am sending you two quotes concerning our pursuit of joy. For many years these thoughts have been the source of profitable meditation for me.

"Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." CS Lewis

And then some thought provoking words from John Piper.

"...we do not make a god out of joy. We show, rather, that whatever we find greatest joy in is our God. And the greater the joy in him, the greater the glory we give. Where our greatest Treasure is, there is our heart’s greatest pleasure. ...No conflict! God’s glory and our joy rise together. For God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him."

What a rich, thriving soul we can have if we turn whole-heartedly to the God of the Universe for forgiveness and new life—and ultimately, joy.

Peace When Surrounded by Enemies

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;…” Psalm 23:5a

Think for a moment about the literal understanding of this wonderful verse from the 23rd Psalm; sitting down to eat with my enemies present. I don’t know about you, but, the last thing I would find desirable when “enemies” are around me would be eating. Any kind of distress immediately shuts down my interest in food—it is like my stomach just cannot handle it. So, let’s imagine the opposite situation where peace, calm, and joy reign within me. Yes, now food sounds wonderful. So how do we merge a difficult situation AND happiness to be eating a wonderful meal? Only one possibility exists for such a combination. There must be someone totally in charge of the “enemies;” so completely in control that I have absolutely no concern about them. Only God meets the qualifications of such a protector. Is He your protector, or are you relying on someone (or something) very inferior to Him?

This Thursday morning at 9:30 join me on Zoom to discuss Psalm 23:5a in great detail and be encouraged in enjoying the blessings of God in the midst of trying people and situations (like maybe the Virus :)).

GREAT JOY

“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” (Luke 2:10-11)

What a greeting the angel gave to the shepherds more than 2000 years ago—”I bring you good news of great joy…." Luke records this “good news” as being directly about a Savior being born in Bethlehem (the city of David). Surely this good news trumps every other greeting anyone in all mankind could ever be told. God Himself came to earth to live a perfect life and then sacrifice Himself on the cross to rescue us from the eternal punishment our disregard for Him deserves. Oh to embrace this good news; this is the source of the only “great joy” anyone can know. Do you know this kind of joy? Does this joy dominate this season as we approach the celebration of the Savior’s birth? If not, take some time to meditate on the beauty and wonder of God’s amazing grace by slowly reading Luke 2.

Ladies of all ages, remember that there will be a happy time of celebration this coming Friday evening at 6pm at Discovery Baptist Church. The Ladies’ Old Fashioned Christmas event includes a wonderful dinner, music and encouraging words from our missionary wives, Rachel Waldock and Rachel Gustafson. There will also be a fun card making craft for the younger girls. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!
